Who is best at dealing with pandemic?

The British weekly magazine “The Economist” ranked Poland on 6th place among countries whose economies dealt best with the pandemic. The criteria taken into account include: increase of GDP and household incomes, stock market performance, capital spending and government indebtedness.

The following countries are on the top of the list: Denmark, Slovenia, Sweden, Norway, Chile and Poland and Ireland joint.

The magazine explains that the first indicator taken into account is a change in GDP since the end of 2019, which shows the overall condition of the economy. In this approach, countries with tourism-based economy fared better as their economies were not afflicted by the pandemic travel bans.

Next, “The Economist” analysed household incomes enabling to estimate how families have manged the crisis reflecting not only salaries but also THE government financial aid. Stock market performance, a next indicator analysed by the magazine, informs on the condition of capital markets. Capital spending - the fourth measure considered by “The Economist” – shows the scale of optimism with which the business looks to the future of the country.

The last indicator is the government indebtedness, which may show possible future increase of taxes and reduction of costs.

For the purpose of this standings “The Economist” analysed business data from 23 countries. The increase of Polish GDP in this period amounted to 3.1 %, increase of income per person – 3.3% and the stock exchange listing increased by 25.4%. Capital spending decreased by 7.1% and government indebtedness amounted to 5% of GDP.
