Poland-Lithuania gas pipeline, i.e. transborder interconnector linking the Polish and Lithuanian systems of gas transmission has just been put into operation. It will also make it possible to transmit gas to Latvia and Estonia. This strategic and essential gas infrastructure is an important step for the Three Seas Initiative and the European Union.
The cost of the investment amounted to EUR 500 million. The operators of the project are the Polish GAZ SYSTEM S.A. and the Lithuanian AB Amber Grid. The interconnector is 522 km long and it connects the gas compressor station Rembelszczyzna in the Mazowieckie Region with the compressor station Jauniunai in Lithuania. Connecting the systems of gas transmission has received EUR 300 million from the EU budget.
The interconnector gives additional possibilities, diversifying supplies and their sources. Thanks to it, we increase our energy security. – Tomorrow, thanks to our terminal, the gas will flow to Poland. It is the best and strongest reaction to Russia’s actions. We are not surprised by them. History repeats itself – said President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda.
Thanks to the new interconnector, almost 2 billion m³ of gas will flow to us from Lithuania– it is around 10% of the Poland’s demand. It is a further investment in infrastructure, which will strengthen even more the significance of Poland as an important country in the UE gas issue.
